During the Advent period, the Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands in conjunction with its subjurisdiction in Gozo has organised a series of philanthropic activities addressed towards various recipients. The first activity was held on the 3rd December when, in collaboration with the local council of the town of Marsascala, a carol singing public event was organised featuring local town talent supported by the VOICE STUDIO led by Dame MarieTherese Vassallo. The proceeds of this event were targeted to support the AID TO THE CHURCH IN NEED that supports missionary projects in countries where Christians are being persecuted for their faith.

The second activity, held on the 12th December, was aimed at the members of the jurisdiction who met for a social and fund-raising event at Torri ta’ Lanzun (the Order’s World Headquarters).  The evening included a fundraising raffle and an auction of an oil painting donated to the Grand Priory by one a renowned Maltese Artist.  The attendees were also encouraged to take part in a Reverse Advent Calendar and thus collect and bring to this function, non-perishable food items to build up a FOOD BANK to distribute to the needy. This food was forwarded to the Food Bank which is run by St Andrew's Church inValletta.  The Food Bank provides food for needy families referred to it by social works and other NGOs.

The Medieval Chapel of the Castello was purposefully decorated for the occasion. A spiritual welcoming speech was delivered by Fr. Joseph Cini, SDB, ChLJ, followed a short address by His Excellency Chev. the Prof. Charles Savona Ventura, Grand Prior of the Maltese Islands and Grand Historian of the Military & Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem.

It was a very enjoyable evening which served as a social gathering between members.

The final activity for Advent was the celebration of Saint Lazarus Day on the 15-16th December with an organized visit where musical entertainment was provided to the inmates of the ST LAURENCE HOME FOR THE ELDERLY and the resident psychiatric patients at GOZO GENERAL HOSPITAL when suitable seasonal gifts were distributed to the inmates.
