Dear Family, your excellencies, brothers and sisters in Saint Lazarus, ladies and gentlemen.

We remember our deceased Grand Master, Don Carlos Gereda y de Borbón, Marqués de Almazán. On behalf of our Order and on behalf of myself I like to say a few words. It is not my intention to give a long speech.

Normally at a remembrance service the deceased is praised for what he did. I like to say a couple of words about Don Carlos on how I saw him and what he was to me.

H.E. Don Carlos Gereda y de Borbón, Marqués de Almazán, 49th Grand Master of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, passed away on Tuesday, 29th August 2017 in Madrid, Spain after a long struggle with cancer. 

Don Carlos was born on 24th January 1947 in Montevideo, Uruguay to Don Nicolás Gereda y Bustamante and Doña María Luisa de Borbón y Pintó.  After moving to Spain, he attended school in the UK, then returned to Madrid where he studied for an Industrial Engineering degree and an M.B.A at Complutense University.  In his professional career, Don Carlos worked as a commercial development entrepreneur, designing oil refining and petrochemical plants and working in the civil engineering and telecom sectors.  He married Doña María las Nieves Castellano y Barón, Marchioness de Almazán on 15th February 1975.
