The Commandery of Avalon hosted England & Wales’ Southern Investiture in Exeter on the 25th October.  We were treated kindly by the weather, ensuring that the procession from The Guildhall to the Cathedral Quire was colourful and attractive to onlookers.  The Bailiff and members were accompanied by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Exeter and our honoured guest, The Hon. Miss Ann Widdecombe, DSG.  The Commander of Avalon, the Reverend Louis Baycock, EGCLJ, conducted the service while the address was given by the Reverend Canon Brendan Clover, ChLJ, MMLJ, Senior Provost of Woodard Schools.

Also this year, by gentle autumn weather, the 5 Mile Run of the 8th SwissCityMarathon Lucerne took place in front of an impressive scenery alongside the Lake of Lucerne. The three distances 5 Mile Run, Half Marathon and Marathon offered for all participants a matching run. The morning was a little bit gloomy. In the afternoon, shortly before starting the 5 Mile Run, participants and spectators were rewarded for their patience. Approximately 45‘000 spectators, Caribbean brass bands, bells and alphorns cheered the 10‘000 runners. The atmosphere was this year again unique.

Three senior international office bearers of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem were in Cape Town this past weekend to reaffirm ties with and support for the South African Grand Bailiwick and its future growth and humanitarian work. To mark the occasion, Grand Chancellor Chevalier Edward White; Grand Marshall, Chevalier C W Gilluly; and Vice Grand Chancellor, Dame Marny Gilluly, led a simple ceremony donating and dedicating a public bench in the historic Company’s Garden in the Cape Town Central City, wearing their distinctive church mantles bearing the iconic eight pointed green cross of St Lazarus.
