A solemn ceremony entitled The Day of Gratefulness took place on 28 June in Madesimo (very close to Sondrio, Lombardia Region) The event was promoted and organized by the Grand Priory of Italy. The population of neighbouring municipalities also participated, and the significant presence of local, civil, military and religious authorities was greatly appreciated.

It was an important and historic event, with the aim of expressing deep and heartfelt thanks to those European and non-European countries that, in the worst period of the pandemic of COVID-19, provided logistic-operating and sanitary support to the Italian nation.

The St. Lazarus Hereditary Commandery of Rurich e.V. bought around 20.000 hospital face masks and donated 50% of them to people in need in Germany, Italy and Spain at the beginning of April. These masks mainly went to childrens’ hospitals and institutions for the elderly.

The other 50% are still available for whenever they may be needed.

Projects in the Time of Corona

Cautious optimism is spreading in Germany: Some of the protective measures against the spread of the coronavirus are being eased. We are regaining leeway – yet prudence and above all consideration remain paramount! Practised solidarity means to continue keeping your distance, to act wisely, and above all to show consideration! And exactly this is being done in the projects of the Order of St. Lazarus: Our partners are using all their energy to continue supporting those in greatest need. This is currently more challenging than ever: Lockdowns hamper the supply of food and hygiene products. This makes it all the more important for the members of the Grand Bailiwick to set examples, because the concern for the weak, the old and the sick remains.

The Commandery of the West members prides themselves on being engaged with their communities. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a State of Emergency for California on March 4, 2020 with San Francisco and surrounding Bay area identified as one of the first areas in California to be heavily affected. On March 5, 2020 Shirley Tamoria, OLJ MD was providing medical services with the St. Anthony’s Foundation clinic in San Francisco. The clinic cares for the primarily homeless individuals residing in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. The foundation provides up to 2,000 meals daily, clothing, social services resources, and provided basic medical care in a clinic.
